The main walkway leads to the Arpad Memorial, designed in classical style and erected in 1896 by the architect Gyula Berczik and the sculptor Ede Kallos. The statue was remodelled in 1997-98 by the sculptor Karoly Buzar and forms an enchanting backdrop for the national celebration ceremonies and other events organised in the park. The traditional folk festival of Opusztaszer village held formerly on the first Sunday of September was named after this memorial and is called the "szobori bucsu" (statue fiesta). It is interesting to see the small tree ferns that grow in the limestone of the Arpad Memorial. The curiosity is that this species also lives in the Verecke Pass. (The route by which the conquering Magyars first passed through the Carpathian Mountains into the Carpathian Basin).
Panorama painting
The 120 metre long, 15 metre wide and 38 metre across circular panorama painting recalls the events of history eleven hundred years ago. The moment is captured with the help of brush, paint and canvas, artistic skill and some imagined episodes of the conquest plus the imagination of spectators. Many contemporary artists helped Arpad Feszty with the two year task that lasted from 1892 to 1894. Landscapes are by László Mednyánszky and the battle scenes by Pal Vago.
Monastery of Szer
Archaeologists in 1970 started to excavate Szer in the acacia grove on the site of the current garden of ruins under the leadership of Otto Trogmayer. A cemetery of the first Hungarian settlers was found where the dead had been buried according to pagan custom. Their settlement extended as far as the site of the future Monastery. In the centre of the Mediaeval settlement stood the Monastery of Szer, which had three main periods of construction.

Hunnial
On the last Saturday of June the Public Benefit Company that runs the National Historical Memorial Park at Opusztaszer organises a special annual event called HUNNIAL.
The word Hunnial is derived from the word "Hun" and the name of the month June (junius in Hungarian). The Magyars, whose nation was born and named Magyar at Opusztaszer, are known as Hungarians all over the world, so the name Hunnial is an attractive one for visitors that come to the Park from all parts of the world. The large number of visitors that assembles in the Park to see the ceremonies commemorating the memory of the Magyar tribes, who held their first National Assembly at Opusztaszer, can also enjoy the atmosphere of early mediaeval times evoked during the celebrations. The ceremonies are traditionally held in front of the statue of Arpad (Chief of Chieftains of the conquering Magyar tribes) with the participation of recurring performers and visitors.
Hodmezovasarhely can be found on the south-eastern part of the Great Plain, 25 kilometres from Szeged, at the meeting point of Route 45 and Route 47.
Hodmezovasarhely Town of County Rank was a populated area even in the ancient ages. Almost six-thousand year old fossils were uncovered at the boundary of the town. The town and its surrounding was enclosed by Lake Hod and the connected river system. The population earned their living from trading and farming. Earlier Hód and Vásárhely had been two separate villages, and then in the 15th century they melted with Abrany and this typical market town of a great territory came to existence. At the time of the Turkish occupation the town had almost completely unpopulated and only after the expulsion of the Turks did the population slowly return. The town began to develop dynamically at the dualistic era and at the turn of the century an enormous process of construction started, which resulted in a basic change in the aspect of Vasarhely to the beginning of the 20th century. Hodmezovasarhely preserved the characteristics of a market town and was surrounded by an extensive system of detached farms. After the Second World War there were constructions in the town therefore housing estates were built and the suburban area began to develop. An industrial plant was built at the boundary of the town although the heavy industry had never been typical in the town. It was the time when the giant factories appeared and they were mostly connected to light industry, agricultural machine building and food processing. After the transition and with the creation of the self-government system Hodmezovasarhely began a dynamical development, particularly on the field of the infrastructure. The conception of development, which was planned then, has almost utterly been made. By the middle of the 90s this development of Hodmezovasarhely was acknowledged by prizes and awards on national as well as on international level. The town got Europe Prize and had outstanding results in canalisation too. A new launder was established and a new computer technical net is about to start working, which is to connect the larger institutions and establishments of the town. The hospital of the town was reconstructed and the reconstruction of the Kakasszek health-resort will have been finished by the end of this year. The plans for the future development of Hódmezõvásárhely are also seem to emerge, the building of an indoor swimming hall and a spa-hotel are about to begin from the fall of this year. The natural treasure of Hodmezovasarhely, which is important for tourism, is its thermal water reserve supplying the swimming-pool and attracting a lot of tourists to the town at summers. The building of a new pensioner residential park became possible thanks for a successful tender. Not only an infrastructural but also a cultural and an artistically upward trend began. It is really important to give the chance of cultivated and pleasant entertainment to the citizens of the town. It is outstandingly important to make the road-section between Hódmezõvásárhely and Algyo 4-striped and the construction of a road that avoids the town and frees it from heavy vehicle traffic. This way Hódmezõvásárhely can also get connected in the motorway system that drives through Middle-Europe.
The town might be able to become the most outstanding and most dynamically developing town of the whole region and its citizens can highly be proud of.
